How To Optimize Your Time To Learn A Language

No language can be learned overnight, however, with time any language can be learned.

Once your brain starts working on a language, whether you choose to actively work on the language or not, your brain is always working for you. There are a variety of techniques that can be used to learn a language, however, all have one thing in common: TIME

  • Spend At Least A Little Time, Almost Every Day
  • Invest A Little Time, Get A Big Return On Your Investment
  • Make Time To Think In The Language Throughout Your Day

Spend At Least A Little Time, Almost Every Day

The most basic suggsestion for you to learn and master any language is to spend time learning, practicing, thinking in or using the language every day. Even as little as 1 minute a day is worth a lot for your language future.

Within your daily time in the language, you can pick out interesting things that you want to repeat, new things in which you are curious about their meanings, new things you want to learn, or just practice things you already know. This may also be a great time to make yourself think in the language. Be creative. Through daily routines and practice, your brain will begin to anticipate your language learning exercises, and it will become easier to engage in other aspects of the language.

Just as it is important to attempt to learn the language as much as possible, it is also very useful to allow yourself a break from learning the language too. Go a few days without any effort on learning, just enjoying your life. Don't worry about falling behind. Your subconscious will continue to work for you even when you are not studying the language. In fact, you could still engage in enjoyable activities within the language like watching TV, listening to music, etc... But just for fun. The idea is to pace yourself and reward yourself for the effort you are making along the way. Your capacity in the language will be stronger the longer you take to learn and pursue the language, so be creative, have fun and enjoy your journey.

Invest A Little Time, Get A Big Return On Your Investment

In many cases, you can spend a little time today learning a language, and the thoughts associated with that learning will carry on for a lifetime. You have to learn to get your subconscious and brain to work for you.

Example 1 (The "Das Deutsche" Song That Lives Forever)

You are eager to learn the German language and you have chosen to listen to German music as a method for learning and enjoyment. The first time you put in a recommended song from the group "Das Deutsche", you really like the music and can hear words which you think are in German, but you really have no idea what is being said. You play the song anyway. For a week, every day, you play the song by "Das Deutsche" over and over. At the same time, you begin to hear a few of the words in the song. At this point, you really have taken a liking to the song and can repeat some of the sounds, even sing along, but still do not know what is being said. At some point, say a week or so later, you become tired of listening to that particular song and need a break from the song. You take a 5 day break from listening to the song, and on your fourth day, you are on the bus on the way to work and can hear the "Das Deustche" song in your head playing. It plays the wonderful song in your subconscious, and somehow, you find that you can hear more of the words as well, but still don't know exactly what they mean. Your brain is working for you are this point and has already stored the words for use later. A year passes and you have completely not listened to the song, but continued to study German in different ways. One day, you decide to put on the "Das Deutsche" song again to see how you've progressed, and now you can understand most of the song, and its meaning! WOW.... You then get back on the bus to work and the song plays again in your subconscious.... The cycle continues for the rest of your life.....

Make Time To Think In The Language Throughout Your Day

Give yourself a chance to explore the language throughout the day. Sit down, crack open a newspaper or magazine within the language, that you may not even understand. Scan over the materials and try to become familiar. Using the vocabulary that you have, which may be limited, try to create simple sentences in the language, based on your own thoughts and feelings.
