How To Invest In Language Learning Resources

The key to investing in language learning resources is not only to find and buy resources, but to spend time to try and get the most out of them.

There are a number of resources available today to learn almost any language that you are interested in learning. The cost of these resources in many cases is minimal, and some are even free. It will definitely be worth it for you to invest money into buying books, study aides, learning CDs and other products to help you on the journey of learning language. However, it is important that you get the most out of every item that you purchase.

Invest In One Or More Dictionaries That Are Useful To You

On your journey of learning a language, your dictionary will be one of the most valuable resources you ever buy. You can carry your dictionary anywhere and everywhere, and when you want to look up a word or meaning quickly, your dictionary is there to provide the answer. A dictionary is a key asset to learning by association, by giving you the opportunity to complete thoughts that you have in the language when you do not know how to say the words that you want to say.

It is important to find one or more dictionaries that suit your needs. Some dictionaries just do not provide enough information for someone learning the language. Spending time and money to find the right dictionary or dictionaries as a resource is well worth it.

Invest In A Notebook And A Pencil

Each word that you learn, each new thought that you have in the language, any new challenging phrases that you encounter during your language learning journey can be written down. Once written down, you are giving your mind further opportunity to work on the language, especially just by translating what you hear or see into written form. Write It Down, Write It Down, Write It Down!

You won't always have your notebook or pencil with you, so just find a piece a paper to write down whatever it is you are learning.

Invest In Workbooks With Exercises

Workbooks are excellent tools for practicing language and learning in small steps. Workbooks allow you to learn at your own pace, and provide a level of repetition and learning that is necessary for you to learn and practice the language. The exercises within the workbooks usually present the information in different ways and ask you to come up with answers, which helps your mind see the language from different perspectives.

Invest In Children's Books As A Solid Foundation

Children's books written in the language you are learning are usually easier to understand and read, with smaller words and/or phrases that you can learn and practice. Specifically, toddler books progressing into the elementary children's years are very helpful for you to practice and learn the language. Some children's books also come with cassettes, CD's and/or videos to further help you along.

Invest In Children's Songs and Tunes

Children's songs are fun and usually short, containing simple words in the language that you can practice and learn. Also, the meaning behind the songs is very simple in nature, allowing you to relate the words used with the actual context and meaning of the song. Sing along and have fun - perhaps sing songs that you learned as a child and learn how to sing them in the language that you are learning.

Invest In Magazines, Newspapers, Advertisements and Other Paper Based Media

There are a variety of paper-based media and forms of communication within the language. Ideally, you can find materials that you are interested in and try to read those. You do not need to understand everything that you read when investing in this material. The key here is exposure. The more you read and re-read that same magazine, newspaper, etc... that you invest in, the easier it will be for your mind to understand what are the contents contained within. It is excellent to find sources that you can read in the language and then share the knowledge with others, whether communicating in the language, or translating back to your native tongue to relay the message. Either way, you will be getting a lot out of the resources you have.

Invest In Interaction With Others

Interacting with others who utilize and speak the language that you are learning is priceless. Talking to yourself in the language is the first step to interaction (anyone can do this). Second is getting into an environment where you are able to practice with others. This may involve signing up for a language class where others are also learning and speaking, talking on the telephone with people who speak the language, visiting communities in which the language is spoken, going to stores where people speak the language, joining language learning forums online where people enjoy sharing thoughts / experiences in the language, and so on. It is really up to you how far you want to go to create an environment in which you can interact with others. However, the experience you gain interacting with others in the language is critical to your language learning success.

Invest In A Variety Of Study Materials

You are not the first person to learn the language you are pursuing, and will not be the last. Many steps that you are about to take in learning the language, others have already gone through this journey. Those people who have already learned the language have taken the time to record and refine those steps into the form of language study materials that you can use to optimize your language learning time. It is important to learn and practice the language over and over as much as possible. Different study materials assist with different aspects of the language. Some are designed for reading, some are desgined for writing, some for speaking, some for listening, and others for all aspects of the language. You can never have too many study materials when learning a language.

Invest In Various Forms Of Media

TV, Radio, Shortwave, Cable, CDs, Music, Cassettes, Podcasts, MP3s, Internet and more are all great resources to have when learning a language. CDs, for example, can be played over and over again in repetition, to help you learn that songs contained on the CD, and continue to practice. Find a song or songs you like, pick out a TV show that is interesting or a radio program that peaks your interest. Make time to enjoy those things that you like in the language.

Invest Time, Patience and Persistence

Learning languages takes time, you have to be patient to learn things that you do not know and when you feel like giving up because it's "too much" or "too hard" or "you feel like you will never get there", you have to keep going. Many times, the answers to your questions or the missing links to your confusion are right around the corner.
